Architecture: Interacting Supports
Why This MattersRead the earlier reference in its original context, with its historical statements and limits preserved.
Material provision, usable routines, knowledge, trustworthy cooperation, and strategic choice support one another. The framework uses interacting supports rather than a universal ladder.
Replace the original mandatory ladder with interacting supports: material provision; regulation and usable routines; knowledge and skill; trustworthy cooperation; and strategic choice. None is a universal prerequisite that must be perfected before another can begin.
| Support | Interaction to examine |
|---|---|
| Material provision | Cash, benefits, housing and care conditions affect which actions are feasible. |
| Regulation and routines | A manageable task or cue can support action; practical security and support can make that task easier. |
| Knowledge and skill | Better information can expand choices; time and resources determine whether learning is accessible. |
| Cooperation and boundaries | Shared work can reduce burdens; fair agreements and appropriate boundaries protect participants. |
| Strategic choice | Select among feasible alternatives; outcomes then change resources, relationships and the next decision. |
A Repeated Decision Cycle
Describe the situation; identify obligations and values; list alternatives including waiting or declining; verify decision-changing inputs; calculate consequences; examine disclosed shocks; select with reasons; compare actual outcomes with the forecast. This cycle is a proposed working method, not a proven causal law.
Three Kinds Of Circumstance
- Control: actions and agreements the person can presently choose.
- Influence: outcomes that may respond to effort or cooperation but are not guaranteed.
- Accommodation: constraints that must be planned around or challenged through appropriate collective or institutional routes.
The same person can occupy several modes at once: stabilize cash, continue learning, cooperate with others and explore a small experiment. Borrowing is an optional tool examined only when relevant. It is not a stage of maturity.
