Understand Who You Rely On And What Your Options Are

Why This MattersUnderstand what saying no would cost and which alternatives are actually available.

Power concerns who can influence a particular decision. Look at actual authority, resources, and alternatives rather than who seems most important.

Ask Who Can Change The Outcome

Power means being able to influence an outcome. Ask which relationship and decision you mean. A manager may control shifts and still rely on workers for essential tasks. A customer may choose whether to buy and rely on the provider’s knowledge. Map authority, resources, information, and alternatives. Appearance alone does not tell you who can do what.

Relying on others is not automatically exploitation. Work, care, friendship, and exchange all involve dependence. Check whether expectations can be discussed, arrangements changed, and withdrawal handled. A dependency everyone understands may support shared life. One nobody has examined may leave someone facing responsibilities they cannot realistically refuse.

Check Whether Another Option Is Usable

A contractor may receive most work through one platform. Joining another may help without providing an independent replacement. Both may depend on the same local demand and available hours. Check actual customers, access, terms, and time before counting the new listing as a strong alternative.

Pursuing every possible lead can use the time needed to deliver current work or recover. Focus on the dependency that is actually limiting a choice. A bounded step may improve an alternative without overwhelming the present arrangement. The aim is room to negotiate or leave when necessary, not an appearance of needing nobody.

Keep Fair Limits When Your Position Improves

A stronger position does not relax duties to other people. Their urgency, confusion, or lack of alternatives is not permission to deceive or coerce. Where dependence cannot change quickly, clear records, support, or action with others may help. A power map should reveal possible action and harm, rather than encourage certainty about hidden motives or imagined enemies.

Update the map when people’s actions contradict it. An impressive title may not include authority over this decision. A quieter person may hold knowledge the task needs. Check who can make the relevant commitment so a request reaches someone who can respond.

The Main Points

  • Map a particular decision and relationship.
  • Check the access, time, and cost needed to use another option.
  • More bargaining power does not remove fair-treatment limits.

Try This Small Exercise

  1. Name a decision where another party has important control.
  2. List alternatives you have checked and what switching would cost.
  3. Choose a manageable step that could make an alternative more usable.
